The circulator pump is used to move gases, liquids or semi-liquid material in a closed circuit. A common feature of this category is the water-based heating or cooling system, due to their closed circuit design, this type of pump has high friction within the piping system and the amount of effort required is significantly less than other types of pumping systems, where the pump would need to lift the fluid from a low potential energy to a higher one.

The circulator pump is popular nowadays as a water saving method when is combined with water heaters. When the hot water tap is turned, the water already sitting in the pipe is sent first, users allow the cool water to flow down drains while they wait for the hot water to arrive, adding a circulator pump to the water heater changes this workflow. When the hot water is not in use, the pump pulls the water back to the heater and when the tap is turned, the pump sends directly hot water to the user, in this way, the saving of water is significant.
